Marquise Cut Diamond Ring – A Symbol of Eternal Love

The Marquise cut diamond is an elegant specimen, which is often used in engagement rings. It also has an interesting history. It is said that King Louis XV, the Monarch of France in the early middle ages, was desirous of an exquisite diamond to resemble the beautiful mouth of his wife. His command was dutifully obeyed by his court jeweler, as he created a stunning masterpiece, which came to be known as the Marquise Diamond.  This legend is a great example of the diamond being used as a symbol of love. Thus, it is not surprising that the Marquise diamond is extensively used to make engagement and wedding rings.

Also known as the ‘Navette Cut’, the Marquise cut diamond resembles an oval. It has pointed ends and smooth sides. There are 58 facets in the diamond, with an aspect ratio of 2:00-1:00 (length-breadth). Jewelers who do not adhere to this proportion may end up creating the dreadful ‘bow tie’ effect in the diamond. The quality of loose diamond should also pass the GIA certification. Loosely cut Marquise diamonds look dull and disproportionate.

Wide arrays of stone settings are available for Marquise cut diamonds. The most popular setting, however, is the prong setting. One could use a three-prong or a four-prong setting depends on how a person wishes to design their ring. The three-prong setting is very popular among married couples, as it utilizes the Three Stone design (past, present, future).  Using a proper setting for the Marquise diamond is very crucial. It should be ensured that the setting holds the diamond firmly, as a loose setting could cause it to wobble and slip out of the ring. Any skepticism about using the prong setting for the ring, the option is the bezel setting. It is a stronger setting than prongs, as it holds the diamond securely and protects it from wear and tear.

Depending on the budget, one could choose from platinum, silver, white gold and yellow gold for designing their Marquise cut ring.

It would be advisable and would indeed be recommended to buy GIA certified diamonds from online stores as there is an overabundance of options to choose from. One could find different settings on online stores as well which would give the freedom to customize the ring. Prior to purchasing a Marquise cut ring, the quality and gemstone grading should be kept in mind. There are many fake diamonds out there therefore the necessity of researching and exploring cannot be emphasized enough.
